SYRIA’S TENT CITIES

Many Syrian refugee children around the world don’t have access to a basic education, and this becomes a barrier to them growing up to be literate, self-sufficient, contributing members of their society. Some refugees are living illegally in neighboring countries, while others have been resettled permanently halfway across the world in Canada. This film examines the lives of the Syrian refugees on both sides of the globe, as they slowly improve their situation through the efforts of two individuals who have dedicated their lives to making education and inclusivity a right for all Syrian children.

BÎR (WELL)

In the 1990s many people in Kurdistan were taken into custody and interrogated under torture; their killers disposed of the bodies by throwing them out of helicopters, or burying them in acid-filled wells. Thousands were murdered/disappeared by paramilitary forces—such as Jitem and Hizbul-Kontra—that were financed and supported by the state, though they have always stuck to the line: “We didn’t do it.” The documentary ‘BÎR’ looks at the case of seven people, including four children, who were disappeared from the town of Kerboran [Dargeçit] in 1995, and tells the story of their families’ tireless search for their bones.

SYNCHRONICITY

People come, people go - Yet everyone is moving in the same direction. We all are sharing something that we are unaware of, creating one big picture we are unable to see.  The film explores the idea of how everyone is connected in a way we may not realise. By sharing time, space and movement, we overlap and create a bigger picture.

AOTEAROA - WE ARE ALL MADE OF STARS

Nature knows what she does. She knows the right place for each tree, each mountain, each cloud, each bird, each breath of wind, each person. Nature knows, since we’re part of it, we know too, or at least we should know. It seems we’re forgetting… The time has come to remember who we are, where we come from and what we are here for.

RENDEZ-VOUS

The fleeting moment when you feel an electricity coming from the city, and exchanged looks become shared moments, if only for an instant; Paris is drowsy in the lingering heat of a summer afternoon, when the contained energy of the capital is ready to wake with the first spark. An imperceptible sensation finds an echo in my body; our gazes meet, and the echo resonates in a partner’s gesture, as we are drawn into an ephemeral dance. Other bodies gravitate around ours and join in – strangers, passers-by, tourists – who intersect and then go on their way bearing its imprint within them.
